Prompted by the considerable impact and substantial potential of recent advances and emerging possibilities in gene technology, biomarkers and 'omics' technologies, nanobiotechnology, stem cells, and companion diagnostics on reliable diagnosis and effective therapy of various cancers, the authors have attempted to produce a fully-updated and comprehensive outline of the applications of exploitable nanoscience and nanotechnology in combating cancer. 

The study also introduces the reader to nucleic acids (especially dynamic DNA), gene mutations, virus-like particles, immunology and vaccines, plant nutraceuticals and the sunshine superstar (the wonder vitamin D) in the context of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancers. 

While taking the reader on an exciting journey through several disciplines such as ayurveda, allopathy, traditional and complementary medicine, chemotherapy and nanomedicine, some closely related issues of general health and diseases other than cancer are also touched upon briefly wherever relevant.

H D KUMAR (PhD London, 1963) coordinated the multi-faculty biotechnology programme of Banaras Hindu University from 1989–1993 and has been a member of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) panel on environmental effects of ozone depletion since 1989. He is currently interested in such issues of global concern as climate change, nanobiotechnology, stem cell biology and alternative and complementary medicine.

          Kumar is a prolific writer on issues such as environment, climate change, agriculture, molecular biology and frontline areas of biomedical sciences. He has written more than 150 research and review papers and over 27 books. He also edits the Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology for the Korean Society of Microbiology.

SWATI KUMAR (MBBS, MD) finished her medical school and residency training in paediatrics from the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 2000. Taking advanced training in New York (USA), she did a residency in general paediatrics from 2001-2004. She specialized in infectious diseases of children at the State University of New York, 2004–2007, focusing on the study of Chlamydia pneumoniae infections in humans and animals. At Present, she is Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA).

She has co-authored two books with H D Kumar (Global and General Environment and Modern Concepts of Microbiology). She has also published several research and review papers on topics related to infectious diseases.

Panel set up to examine pay revision

The State government on Wednesday announced the setting up of a committee to examine the decision of the Centre on the revision of pay scales to its employees based on the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. The committee will submit its report in three months. It will make recommendations on extending the revised Central scales of pay to State government employees, teachers, and employees of local bodies, says a release from K. Gnanadesikan, Finance Secretary.

The committee will be headed by the Home Secretary and will have as its members the Finance Secretary, the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Secretary and the School Education Secretary.

It will also examine the revision of pension/family pension and retirement benefits extended to Central government employees and make recommendations for State government staff.

The Wellcome Trust Biomedical Ethics funding programme supports research and discussion on the ethical, social and cultural issues raised at every stage in the development and delivery of human and animal healthcare in developing and restructuring countries.
